Author Spotlight on James Maynard
James Maynard’s first connection with the United States Navy began during childhood with his father’s job in the construction of Navy facilities in the World War II era. As a young man, James became a midshipman in Miami University’s NROTC program, which was the catalyst to launch his Navy career. Commissioned an Ensign USN, James served during the Korean War as a combat information center officer and air controller on a heavy cruiser. He later taught navigation and seamanship at the US Naval Academy. Even after returning to civilian life, James continued by joining the submarine reserve and became the Naval Reserve Group Commander in the greater Dayton region and was promoted to Captain USNR before retiring. It’s with this rich and unique life experience that James wrote his first book, For Honor and Love, a novel that takes place during one of the most pivotal periods in United States history.

The story takes us to Sunday, December 7, 1941, when Japanese carrier-based aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor without warning, a day that became known as the Day of Infamy. Those two hours over Oahu changed the lives of all Americans, including two young Miami University students, Robert and Molly, who had fallen in love. Robert joins the Navy and serves in combat in submarines and Molly becomes a reporter for The Oxford Press and tells the story of how America went to war at home. It’s the story of love, courage, and faith in the chaos of war. We asked James what inspired him to write this story. James said “My love for history, especially Naval History, and my great respect for the men of the United States submarine service and my love for Miami University. And I wanted to tell a bit about the people of the greatest generation both at sea and especially on the home front, stories that are often overlooked.” As a first-time fiction author, James tells us that before he shared his story, he prepared by taking writing courses and did extensive research to ensure historical accuracy. “It was a long process,“ he said, “but a rewarding one. It gave me a sense of accomplishment especially at my age of 89 years.” At Braughler Books, we’re pleased to have had the opportunity to help James bring his story to life. David Braughler, founder of Braughler Books, asked James where our team was most impactful during the hybrid publishing process. James said he appreciated the David’s knowledge of the publishing process and the personal touch, especially when receiving helpful feedback. James feels that he was provided an excellent quality finished book that was designed and formatted in the best traditions of the industry. We want to thank James Maynard for choosing Braughler Books to publish his story. We’re truly honored, James. And thank you for your service.
